Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy

With the ceremonial opening of the session by Nikos Philippas, Professor of Finance at the University of Piraeus, President and Founder of the Institute of Financial Literacy, the Athens Stock Exchange participated yesterday in the Global Investor Week, jointly organized by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) and the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE).

In his speech, Yianos Kontopoulos, CEO of the Athens Exchange Group, highlighted the significant work of the Institute of Financial Literacy in promoting the value of financial education in the lives of citizens. He remarked: "Promoting Financial Literacy is a key pillar of the National Strategy for the Development of the Greek Capital Market. For the Athens Stock Exchange, it is a necessary condition for the meaningful upgrade of our capital market. Creating a generation of informed and financially responsible citizens is both our responsibility and our goal. Youth is the most valuable asset for the present and future of every country. Improving citizens' financial literacy levels can lead to greater financial stability, which can ultimately contribute to better overall prosperity for society."

"Financial literacy is an essential skill for the 21st century citizen. According to international studies, well-informed citizens will make better investment decisions, always within the framework of portfolio risk diversification. The Athens Exchange Group - as a key pillar of the capital market - can play an important role in the holistic promotion of financial knowledge and in attracting new, well-informed investors," emphasized Professor Nikos Philippas in his address.

On her part, Anastasia Stamou, B’ Vice President of the Capital Markets Commission, stressed: "Financial literacy plays a very important role in the development of a resilient and attractive capital market and an inclusive economy, as it creates more informed and well-rounded investors, and more informed and well-rounded citizens. In the age of the digital economy and technological innovation, we cannot remain ignorant or fail to understand basic terms of economic and social life, such as what is a business, a market, a share, a loan, an investment, value, or resource and asset management. For the Capital Markets Commission, the promotion of financial literacy is a strategic goal, which is implemented through specific actions and initiatives targeting various population groups, including students, small businesses, and investors. At the same time, the Commission itself is continuously updated and educated on developments and new trends in the capital markets and regulatory oversight."
